| Phonological awareness describes the ability of the brain to differentiate individual sounds within words. Many children with Dyslexia suffer from weak phonological awareness as a result of dyslexia-related processing dfficulties, and this can be one of the underlying problems behind their reading and spelling problems. Many of these children find it easier to develop spelling strategies using RIME chunks than to learn by synthetic phonics. SPINGOES is a highly structured series of games using a simple "Bingo" principle that strengthens this area through an enjoyable mutisensory game format. |

Blend
and synthesise
in three stages for individual rime games:: |
1 Wordbuilding | Each individual game displays one rime and eight onsets. Children move the spinner round the board and build the words orally. (Blending; synthesising.) |
| 2 Spelling | Children create their own bingo sheets by writing each word twice on the photocopiable template provided. | |
| 3 Reading | Children cross off or cover each word on their bingo sheet as the spinner is spun. First to get a line is the winner. |
|
Segment
and analyse
for recap games:: |
1 Recap analogies | The recap board display the rimes and key pictures from the last five games. Children use these to recall/make new rime analogies. |
| 2 Spelling application | Children write 16 different words on their bingo sheets, using each rime at least once. | |
| 3 Identifying rime chunks. | As the spinner is spun, children look for and cross off appropriate wsords on their bingo sheets (segmenting, analysing). |
| Spingoes
combines spinner games with bingo sheets to enable you to play a
fun multisensory game with a class group of ANY SIZE - or with a single student. SPINGOES
provides onset and rime wordbuilding practice with up to 115 rime
families of eight words each, providing a solid phonological basis for
reading and spelling. For each rime there is visual cue, and a recap
game follows every 5 or 6 rime families presented.
TO VIEW EXAMPLE: CLICK HERE Each game gives students the opportunity to build a variety of onsets onto the same rime. Initial blend onsets are introduced gradually, according to levels of difficulty. The SPINGOES programme is divided into 2 sections: short and long vowel rimes.
