Sand timers are  less accurate than digital timers and therefore not suitable for high level tournament scrabble,
but with an average variation of only around 5 seconds either side of the three minute mark, a three minute sand timer is ideal for family ganes and most club scrabble. Digital timers (when they are available) are preferred to sand timers in the official rules, but with a price tag of around $100 the cost can be prohibitive, and many clubs stick to three minute sand timers for their tournaments.
